Description

Fire Support Base (FSB) Bass, pictured in the rainy season. This isolated outpost was part of an inter-locking chain of artillery bases designed to protect the surrounds of the 1st Australian Task Force (1ATF) based in Nui Dat. Several gunpits are covered by hootchies (canvas awnings) to protect the occupants from extreme climatic conditions as well as concealing their positions. Various communications aerials have been erected to provide links with other units. The dirt road in the foreground was considered the outer limit of the defence perimeter.
