This aerial view of the military complex, looking north west, pictures in close relief the full extent of developed infrastructure at the height of the war. A landing strip cuts diagonally across the centre upwards from left to right. Swampy mangrove areas abut the base and a serpentine river is visible in the top feature below the estuary mouth. Enemy contested Long Son Island is partly pictured in the top right corner. This port area was a significant base for the RAAF and Australian Army as it shared facilities with a larger US presence. From here, with other allies, all services supported continuing operations against Viet Cong forces in this coastal region throughout the Vietnam war.
