Studio portrait of eight ex-Prisoners of War (POW) at Chateau d'Oex, Switzerland dated 10 February 1918. Identified back row from left to right, 4400 Corporal (Cpl) Victor Reginald Warren, 15th Battalion, from Lower Turner's Marsh, Tasmania; 243 Private (Pte) Henry Edward Mace, 21st Battalion, from Melbourne, Victoria; probably 3086 Pte Roy Alma Dodd, 28th Battalion, from Subiaco, Western Australia; 1611 Pte James Butler, 32nd battalion, from Subiaco, Western Australia. Front row from left to right, 3088 Cpl Charles Housego, 55th Battalion, from Sydney NSW; 353 Sergeant (Sgt) Isaac Robert Batteram, 31st Battalion, from Bayswater, Victoria; 1143 Pte David Burn Storey, 30th Battalion, from Melbourne, Victoria; and 407 Pte Robert Reoch, 31st Battalion, from Brisbane, Queensland. Cpl Warren enlisted on 7 October 1915 and embarked for overseas on 29 December 1915 aboard HMAT Demosthenes. He was wounded and captured on 11 April 1917. Pte Mace enlisted on 21 January 1915 and embarked for overseas on 10 May 1915 aboard HMAT Ulysses. He was reported wounded and missing on 26 August 1916. Pte Dodd enlisted on 13 August 1915 and embarked for overseas on 18 January 1916 aboard HMAT Medic. He was reported as a POW on 17 October 1916. Pte Butler enlisted on 13 September 1915 and embarked for overseas on 18 November 1915 aboard HMAT Geelong. He was captured on 18 July 1916. Cpl Housego enlisted on 26 September 1915 and embarked for overseas on 20 December 1915 aboard HMAT Suevic. He was wounded and captured at Fleurbaix, France on 20 July 1916. Sgt Batteram enlisted on 12 July 1915 and embarked for overseas on 9 November 1915 aboard HMAT Wandilla. On 1 August 1916 he was reported as a POW wounded in the legs. Pte Storey enlisted on 1 July 1915 and embarked for overseas on 9 November 1915 aboard HMAT Beltana. He was reported missing and then on 23 August 1916 confirmed as a POW. Pte Reoch enlisted on 17 August 1915 and embarked for overseas on 9 November 1915 aboard HMAT Wandilla. He was wounded and captured at Fleurbaix, France on 19 July 1916. All POWs in photograph were repatriated to Switzerland in November 1917. Pte Storey was repatriated to England in March 1918, Sgt Batteram and Pte Dodd in June 1918 and the remainder arrived in England in December 1918. All subsequently returned to Australia. One of a series of over 400 photographs sent by Australian POWs in German camps to Miss M. E. Chomley, Secretary, Prisoners Department, Australian-British Red Cross Society, London.
