Outdoor portrait of three Australian Prisoners of War (POW). Standing on left is 3567 Private (Pte) Leslie Allan McPherson, 55th Battalion from Campsie NSW; standing on right is 5026 Pte Alexander Lobban, 32nd Battalion from Prospect SA; and sitting is 839 Pte Frank Ernest Dawkins, 28th Battalion from Perth WA. Pte McPherson enlisted at the age of 18 on 12 August 1915 and embarked for overseas on 20 December 1915 aboard HMAT Borda with the 17th Battalion. (Note that he is still wearing a number 17 as a cap badge.) He was wounded in both legs and the right hand by a grenade and captured at Fleurbaix, France on 20 July 1916. After being held as a POW in Germany he was repatriated to England on 9 January 1919 and arrived back in Australia on 20 May 1919. Pte Lobban enlisted at the age of 21 on 13 March 1916 and embarked for overseas on 24 June 1916 aboard HMAT Bulla. He was wounded in the left ankle by a grenade and captured at Flers on 8 December 1916. After being held as a POW in Germany, he arrived in England on 2 January 1919 and arrived back in Australia on 27 April 1919. Pte Dawkins enlisted at the age of 19 on 10 March 1915 and embarked for overseas on 29 June 1915 aboard HMAT Ascanius. He was captured at Grandcourt, France on 16 November 1916 and held as a POW in Germany. He arrived in England on 31 December 1918 and arrived back in Australia on 10 April 1919. Pte Dawkins is wearing an "Australia" shoulder title on his cap. Handwritten note on back of photograph reads: "To Miss M.E. Chomley from Three grateful Australians."
