Description

Group portrait of seven actors, in Arabian costume, on stage in a Prisoner of War (POW) production of "Chu Chin Chow" at the Freiburg POW camp, Germany. "Chu Chin Chow" is a musical comedy written, produced and directed by Oscar Asche, with music by Frederic Norton, based (with minor embellishments) on the story of "Ali Baba and the 40 Thieves". The original piece premiered at His Majesty's Theatre in London on 3 August 1916 and ran for five years. One of a series of over 400 photographs sent by Australian POWs in German camps to Miss M. E. Chomley, Secretary, Prisoners Department, Australian-British Red Cross Society, London. Original album housed in AWM Research Centre at RC00864, Album image number 326.
