Description

Informal group portrait of five Voluntary Aid Detachment (VAD) nurses. Identified second from right is Mollie Dandison. The VAD movement had its origins as a civilian nursing movement which was widely represented throughout the major towns and cities of Australia. The VAD groups had close links with the Red Cross with whom Miss Dandison completed first aid training. With the outbreak of the Second World War War, the VADs provided much needed additional staff for the army and civilian hospitals and convalescent homes, and as part of this, Miss Dandison served at Anglesea Barracks in Hobart, Tas, in 1942. She later married TX604 Gunner Albert Paul Roberts.
