Studio portrait of 315 Private (Pte) Sydney Bennett, 4th Battalion, of Peakhurst, NSW. A miner prior to enlisting on 19 August 1914, he embarked from Sydney, NSW, aboard HMAT Euripides on 20 October 1914. He was killed in action on 21 September 1917 in France, aged 31. His brother, Pte Percy Bennett died on 7 August 1916, of wounds received at Pozieres, France, aged 26 (see P05301.093). On the Roll of Honour circular it was stated their grandfather and great grandfather had fought at Crimea, Waterloo and the Indian Mutiny.
