In 1961 he changed his surname to Badcoe. He served in Malaya with 103 Field Battery from September 1961 to November 1963. In 1965, he transferred to the infantry and was promoted to provisional Major in June 1966. He served in Vietnam with the Australian Army Training Team Vietnam (AATTV) from 6 August 1966. He was awarded the Victoria Cross (VC) for his gallantry and leadership during a series of actions in February to April 1966 while serving as an operations adviser in Thua Thien province. During the last of these, on 7 April 1966, he was killed in action.
