Studio portrait of 3459 Private Rowland Leslie James Thwaite, 3rd Battalion of Parramatta, NSW. A boilermaker prior to enlisting, he embarked from Sydney aboard the HMAT Euripides (A14) on 2 November 1915. He was killed in action at Pozieres, France on 22 July 1916, aged 25. Post war his body was not recovered and he is remembered with honour on the Villers-Bretonneux Memorial, France.
