Studio portrait of 3883A Private Roland Taafe Pickering, 3rd Battalion of Auburn, NSW. A blacksmith's striker prior to enlisting, he embarked from Sydney aboard HMAT Medic (A7) on 30 November 1915. He was killed in action on 17 August 1916 at Pozieres, France, aged 20. He has no known grave and is remembered with honour on the Villers-Bretonneux Memorial, France. He was the brother of 3192 Private Frank Hessell Pickering 3rd Battalion, killed in action on 22 July 1916.
