Description

Studio portrait of 4506 Private (Pte) Joseph Henry (Harry) Littlefair, 3rd Battalion, of Weston via Matiland, NSW. A miner at Neath Colliery prior to enlisting in August 1915, Pte Littlefair embarked with the 14th Reinforcements from Sydney on board RMS Osterley on 15 January 1916. After further training in Egypt, his unit arrived in France on 4 April 1916. He was wounded in action by a gun shot wound to the chest on 22 July 1916. Pte Littlefair spent many months recovering in England before rejoining his unit in France on 20 September 1917. A week later he was appointed Lance Corporal (L/Cpl). L/Cpl Littlefair was killed in action at the Battle of Lys, France, on 15 April 1918. He was 27 years of age. Before embarking from Australia in 1915, Harry Littlefair left his miner's lamp at the bar of the Neath Hotel. It is lit every Anzac Day.
