Group portrait of four Australian soldiers of the 12th Field Company Engineers. Standing left is probably 3148 Sapper (Spr) Percy Stanley Heylen, a mason from Adelaide, South Australia. Identified, standing right, is 5439 Spr Charles Edward Haworth, a wheelwright from North Carlton, Victoria, and sitting left, 2251 Spr Alfred James Gravenall, a presser from Northcote, Victoria. Haworth enlisted in September 1915 and embarked with the 5th Field Company Engineers. He was transferred to the 12th Field Company Engineers in May 1916, and returned to Australia in May 1919. Spr Gravenall enlisted in July 1915 and embarked with the 2nd Field Company Engineers in November 1915. He was transferred to the 12th Field Company Engineers in March 1916 and returned to Australia in March 1919. Their unit was based at Vignacourt for several weeks in the winter of 1916-17 while undertaking a number of different engineering projects in the surrounding area.
