Description

Studio portrait of five Australian soldiers of the 22nd Battalion. Identified, left to right, back row: 2308 Private (Pte) David Ernest Roberts; 2294 Pte William John McMurray; 2264 Pte Harry Joseph Costello. Seated, front row: 2310A Pte Leslie John Ogilvie and 2292 Pte Herbert Sparling McGill, who was promoted to Lance Corporal (L Cpl) in 1916. All five men embarked from Melbourne aboard HMAT Hororata (A20) on 27 September 1915. Pte Costello was killed in action on 5 August 1916 in France, aged 30 years. L Cpl McGill was also killed in action in France on 27 July 1916, aged 29 years.
