Reynolds, Herbert Vincent (Private, b.1896 - d.1978)

Collection relating to the service of 622 Private Herbert Vincent Reynolds, 1 Field Ambulance, AIF, Australia, At Sea, Egypt, Gallipoli, Western Front, England, 1914-1918. Collection consists of five small notebooks used as diaries by Private Reynolds between 1914 and 1918, and four small cut-paper silhouettes which were found between the pages of these notebooks.

This collection is remarkable for its detailed descriptions of the training and active service of a stretcher bearer at Gallipoli and later in France. Reynolds descriptions of treating wounded during the first few days of the Gallipoli campaign, and the difficulty of moving men on stretchers while under attack, are particularly interesting. Reynolds was present on Gallipoli from the morning of the Landing on 25 April up to 16 August 1915, when he was evacuated to hospital on Lemnos, due to sickness, and he made daily entries in his diary throughout this period.
