Description

Two diaries relating to the First World War service of Gunner Charles Rea (30199), accompanied by three postcards and a typed transcript and letter. The diaries describe the sea voyage from Sydney to England; periods of leave in London and Northumberland; active service on the Western Front, including the August 18 offensive; and experiences of bombardments, casualties, and muddy conditions encountered in France and Belgium. A typed copy of a post armistice letter to his mother describes his relief at the end of hostilities. Also included are three photographic postcards from 'Vera' addressed to Rea feature images from a fete for 'War Chest Day'.
