Description

Scrapbook containing papers accumulated by Captain (later Major) Valentine Meates MC during his service with Batteries of the 6th Brigade, Australian Field Artillery (AFA) between 1916 and 1919. They comprise mainly official papers relating to artillery operations (operation orders, artillery instructions, sketch maps, messages, etc) but also include souvenirs, news clippings and a photograph. The official documents are principally those of the 6th Brigade AFA, but also of the 1st, 2nd, 4th and 5th Divisional Artilleries. Some relate to battles in 1916 (e.g. Pozieres, Mouquet Farm and Flers) and 1917, but they mainly document the artillery's part in the offensive operations of August-October 1918 (such as Villers Bretonneux, Saint Quentin and the attack on the Hindenburg Line). It includes the Bishop of Amiens' 'Address in Memory of Australian Dead' and circular messages from Monash, Birdwood and Rawlinson.
