Description
Notes, newspaper clippings and photographs of Sgt Francis (Frank) Wormald. This mixed collection covers Sgt Wormald's World War 1 experiences when, as a driver with 53rd Battery, 14 Field Artillery Brigade he witnessed the shooting down of Cavalry Captain Baron Manfred von Richthofen on 21 April 1918. Sgt Wormald argues that he saw his uncle, Gunner Robert Buie MSM (No.3801) and Gunner William John (Snowy) Evans MSM (No.598) shoot Baron von Richthofen in his plane on a ridge near Bonnay and Corbie, France. Mentioned also is the Anzac Day March, London, 1919; Sgt Wormald's early farming backgound near Warrnambool, Victoria; poor conditions on board the ship taking him to Egypt and his World War II experiences as a Sergeant in charge of training younger soldiers and later as a member of a Labour Company.
