Mixed papers of or relating to 3426 Private John Victor Thompson (38th Battalion) and his extended family, comprising: (i) original letters to his sister Evie from England and France, 1917-18, describing his training and first experiences at the front, including artillery and gas attacks (ii) original letters to his parents from members of his battalion concerning his accidental death by an exploding shell on 27 July 1918 during the battle for Villers-Bretonneux (iii) photocopies of official correspondence and other records concerning his death and gravesite (iv) postcards sent to his nephew's mother-in-law by a solder named only 'Jim' (unit unknown), and by her brother Driver Albert Edward King (2nd Field Artillery Brigade), killed in action on 31 July 1917.
