Description
Collection relating to the Second World War service of H2694 Able Seaman Malcolm Duncan McRae, HMAS Tamworth and HMAS Geraldton, at sea, 1945.
Wallet 1 of 1 – This wallet contains two letters written by Able Seaman Malcolm Duncan McRae in 1945 to his family from HMAS Tamworth, and HMAS Geraldton. The first letter written 16 August 1945 describes Japanese surrender celebrations on board HMAS Tamworth. McRae is critical of officers of a ship in the Royal Navy which punished its crew for joining in the celebrations. He also discusses the political situation in Russia, democracy in Britain, and plans for demobilisation which include vocational training of the men before discharge. The second letter is dated 23 December 1945 while aboard HMAS Geraldton. The letter is incomplete, describing poor weather and other issues.
