Description
Collection relating to Hugh Ashby during the Second World War. Collection includes a memoir written by Ashby documenting his capture by the Japanese in Singapore after he joined the Straits Settlment Volunteer Force in 1941 and his experience of being a prisoner of war in Thailand. He was taken prisoner in 1942 and was held in a number of camps including Changi, Bampong, Kanchanaburi, Chungkai and Ubon until his release in 1945. Ashby records his impressions on the prisoners' relationships with the Japanese guards, the treatment of various illnesses, including amputations and escape attempts. Ashby wrote the memoir after visiting the Australian War Memorial in the early 1980s. He died in 1987.
