Description

Collection relating to the First World War service of Lieutenant John Joseph Chapman, 9 Australian Infantry Battalion, Egypt and Gallipoli, 1914-15.

Wallet 1 of 1 - contains a black and white photocopy of a diary written by Lieutenant Chapman while serving with 9 Australian Infantry Battalion. Chapman describes life at Mena Camp before arriving on Lemnos on 4 March 1915, tending horses while watching the landing at Anzac Cove from a transport ship and being sent to Gallipoli in early May. He goes on to provide details of life in the trenches and lists casualties until being evacuated from Gallipoli due to illness in mid-August. The diary includes time spent in hospital in Malta and recovery in England. The final entry, dated 5 November 1915, refers to starting a new diary. Extracts from this diary and from a 1916 diary also written by Chapman are held in 1DRL/0197. Location of originals is unknown.

Includes photocopies of associated photographs and newspaper clippings.
