Collection relating to the Second World War service of VX93186 Private Desmond Arthur White, 42 Australian Infantry Battalion, Second Australian Imperial Force, Bougainville, New Guinea, 1944-1945.

Wallet 1 of 1 – Consists of three letters and two incomplete letters from Private Desmond Arthur White to his relative, Eddie White. These letters were written between 26 December 1944 and 10 June 1945, while Private White was serving with 42 Australian Infantry Battalion in Bougainville. In his letters, Private White writes about being in action against the Japanese, swimming at the beach, hearing news of the war in Europe, seeing films, the hot climate, receiving mail, and looking forward to returning home. He also sends his best wishes and asks questions regarding family members.

History / Summary

Private Desmond Arthur White enlisted to the Second Australian Imperial Force on 11 August 1943, at the age of 18. He served with 42 Australian Infantry Battalion in New Guinea. On 2 August 1945, Private White died of wounds on Bougainville after going into action against the Japanese. He is buried at Port Moresby (Bomana) War Cemetery, Papua New Guinea.
