Collection relating to the Second World War service of 404507 Squadron Leader Eric George Delancey Jarman DFC, 75 Squadron and 460 Squadron, Royal Australian Air Force, Australia and the United Kingdom, 1940-1966.

Wallet 1 of 1 – Contains two folders of material relating to Squadron Leader Eric George Delancey Jarman.

Folder 1 of 2 consists of one flying log book of Squadron Leader Jarman, containing entries dated between 16 November 1940 and 27 April 1944. This log book covers the period of Squadron Leader Jarman’s pilot training in Australia and the United Kingdom, and service with 75 Squadron and 460 Squadron in the United Kingdom. The entries record details such as dates and times of flights, aircraft types and numbers, crewmembers, and purposes of flights. Some of the recorded purposes of flights include elementary flying training, service flying training, advanced flying training, operational training, aircraft tests, cross country flights, transportation, aircraft conversion, and bombing operations on strategic targets in enemy-occupied Europe.

Folder 2 of 2 consists of documents relating to the service and death of Squadron Leader Jarman. It contains:

History / Summary

Squadron Leader Eric George Delancey Jarman enlisted to the Royal Australian Air Force on 13 September 1940. After undergoing his elementary and service flying training in Queensland, and went on to complete his operational training in England. In October 1941, Squadron Leader Jarman was posted to 75 Squadron, Royal Air Force. With this unit, he did his first operational tour, piloting Wellington bomber aircraft in strategic bombing operations against Germany and enemy-occupied France. In May 1942, Squadron Leader Jarman was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross for his coolness, courage and determination in a raid on Cologne, Germany. During this raid, his aircraft was hit by flak and attacked by an enemy fighter. However, he was able to land his damaged plane in England, despite one member of his crew being killed and two others wounded. Squadron Leader Jarman commenced his second operational tour with 460 Squadron in March 1944.On 28 April 1944, Squadron Leader Jarman died in a flying battle over Germany. He is buried at Durnbach War Cemetery, Germany.
