Description

Collection relating to the First World War service of 3133 Corporal (Cpl) Percy William Wintle who enlisted with the 4th Battalion AIF in July 1915. Collection comprises an original two page handwritten letter dated 30 July 1915, sent by (then) Private Wintle to his sister Winnie (Winifred Julia Pritchard nee Wintle). Wintle writes soon after his enlistment whilst at training camp in Liverpool, Sydney. The letter delivers the news to Winnie that he has '...enlisted for the front and we expect to leave hear (sic) in about 3 weeks time for Turkey'. He further explains that he has also written to their mother to tell of his enlistment but he fears she will be upset by the news. He asks Winnie to '...tell her not to worry but still it had to be done because we don't know what will happen in a few months time'. Wintle transferred to the 56th Battalion in February 1916. A typed transcription of the letter and photograph of Wintle in uniform can be found on a project website developed by Mosman Library to commemorate the centenary of the First World War .
