Description

Collection relating to the First World War service of 627 Private Humphrey Courtenay Gilbert Kempe, 3rd Light Horse Regiment, AIF. Collection consists of one original handwritten diary with detailed entries kept by Pte Kempe before and during the Gallipoli campaign. The diary includes entries about: embarkation; making dugouts and avoiding sniper fire; trench warfare; coping with and burying the dead; casualties, illness, vaccination and hospital stays; swimming under shrapnel fire (known as "Turkish Baths"); food rations; torpedoed ships; Major Quinn and battles at Quinn's Post; mail and news from home. The diary also includes names and addresses. Also included in the Memorial's collections, is a book written by Kempe entitled "Participation", which covers his military service.
