Description

Collection relating to the Second World War service of N51378 Captain Arthur Offord Brown, 5 Commander, Royal Engineers (Works), New Guinea, 1943-1944.

The collection consists of:

1 x 6-page illustrated letter written by Brown to his mother (but possibly written as if it was originally intended for his wife), dated 15 December 1943. The letter describes his lifestyle and living conditions in New Guinea as well as the local indigenous peoples, their traditions and lifestyle, commenting on their food, forms of government, appearance, and housing, all through an anecdotal trip he has recently taken. Throughout are very detailed sketches of the regular sites he sees, and events that he has been involved in. Brown was a trained architect, explaining his talent for drawing;

1 x one handwritten letter from Brown to his mother, dated 22 December 1943, wishing her a happy festive period and describing the weather in New Guinea; and

1 x large envelope with pen and ink drawing, sent from Brown to his mother Clara Brown while serving in Papua New Guinea. The envelope depicts a New Guinea scene with traditional house, foliage, and local population.
