Description
Collection relating to the First World War service of 4930 Private Henry George (Harry) Whiting.
Wallet 1 of 1 - consists of an original four page handwritten letter by 4930 Private Henry George Whiting addressed to Hilda Prowse, dated 17 April 1919, written from Villers Bretonneux. The letter vividly describes Pte Whiting's work with the Graves Registration Unit at the end of the war, where he and two of his brothers (Mervyn and Stanley) volunteered to help exhume, identify and rebury soldiers killed in France. In the letter, Private Whiting also expresses his hopes he has done all in his power to see that his brother Walter and cousin Henry were properly buried. Also included in the collection is one handwritten diary by Pte Whiting, covering December 1917 to March 1918. On the last few pages of the diary is a letter written by Pte Whiting to Lil, asking that the diary be kept until his return.
