Description

Collection relating to the First World War service of 1491 Bombardier Walter Purvis McMullin, 10 Field Artillery Brigade, France and Belgium. Collection consists of a small black handwritten diary from 1917. The diary appears to have been originally given to 1406 Driver Kenrick Oakes by his father. It is not known how it came to be used by McMullin. Bombardier McMullin describes a period of leave in England in early 1917; his return to France; general duties and fighting around Bullecourt and Bapaume in Northern France; movement to Belgium and fighting around Ypres. The last diary entry was made on 4 August 1917. McMullin died on 6 August in a Casualty Clearing Station in Belgium from wounds received in action. Also included in the collection is a typed transcription of the diary with additional biographical and service information.
