Description

Collection consists of letters, postcards, newspaper clippings, photographs and negatives relating to various soldiers serving in France and the Middle East during the First World War. The items were sent to the Sydney Morning Herald (SMH) from the relatives of soldiers serving in France and the Middle East to be offered for possible publication as correspondence from the troops. The items mention in detail the living conditions experienced on the front, in trenches and at sea; camp life; the Gallipoli campaign; hospitalisation, injuries and servicemen killed in action; conscription; and the home front. Within each wallet there is an itemised finding aid pertaining to the contents of the wallet.

Wallet 1
Subjects covered include: convalescence and hospitalisation; Gallipoli and the Anzac trenches; enlistment; camp life in Cairo; the Egyptian peoples, tourism, landscapes and agriculture; censorship and the mail.

Wallet 2
Subjects covered include: trench warfare; Australian Red Cross; landing at Gallipoli; injuries, casualties and hospitalisation; proposed referendum in Australia; and the welfare of the troops.

Subjects covered include: Empire Day; perspectives on the war; living conditions; and trench warfare.

Subjects covered include: Gallipoli; Ypres; camp life in France; convalescence and hospitalisation; stretcher bearers; returning home; mental effects of trench warfare and conditions on the front.
