Cheney, Lillian (Civilian)
Collection of six letters received by Miss Lillian Cheney (and her mother) from three soldiers serving in France, Belgium and England. The collection consists of two letters (and one envelope) from 53954 Private John Lancelot Dudley, 18 Battalion; one letter from 4578 Private Walter Arthur Potter, 54 Battalion; and three letters (and one envelope) from 2005 Private Norman Russell Sanderson, 17 Battalion. Also included in the collection is a 'Eine Million Mark' Reichsbanknote, dated 1923.
Miss Lillian Cheney was in her twenties, unmarried and living in Parkes NSW during the First World War. Both Dudley and Potter were Lillian's first cousins; Sanderson was a friend. The two letters from Dudley were written from England in August and December 1918 and describe the trip to England and leave taken in Scotland. The letter from Potter is written from England in April 1918 in which he describes his return to England after being captured in July 1916 and held as a German prisoner of war. The three letters from Sanderson were written from France in November 1918, Belgium in December 1918, and France in January 1919 and are of a general nature.
