Description

Collection relating to the First World War service of 1720 Private Ernest George King, 19th Infantry Battalion, AIF. Photocopies of two diaries: 1) copied in another hand from the original (in December 1916), covering 13 August 1915 to 22 October 1916, and 2) a direct photocopy of the original covering 13 August 1915 to 16 November 1917. The diaries detail training in Egypt, service on Gallipoli, movement to France and service on the Western Front including at Pozières and Bullecourt. King was wounded at Pozières on 26 July 1916, and after returning to his battalion in November, was wounded a second time on 3 May 1917 at Bullecourt. He was evacuated to hospital in England and never saw the front lines again, returning to Australia in late 1917.
