Gammage, John Kingsley (Private, b.1887 - d.1945)
Description
Collection relating to the First World War service of 1764 Private John Kingsley Gammage, 1st Battalion. Collection consists of a diary written between April 1915 - February 1916, contains regular entries covering his embarkation from Australia, the passage to Egypt and service at Gallipoli, in particular the fighting at Lone Pine where he was wounded. It includes comments on the quality of officers, discomfort experienced, Anglo-Australian relations and the eventual evacuation of the Peninsula. Typed transcript held at PR82/003. Also included is a prayer book titled 'Catholic Piety' and contains instructions on following Catholic practices and prayers.
