Description

Collection relating to the First World War service of Lieutenant James Edward Murray MBE, 55 Battalion, Australia, England, France and Belgium, 1913-1919.

Wallet 1 of 2 - Consists of 36 letters, 11 postcards and 3 cards Murray wrote to his parents between 25 December 1913 and 18 April 1918. The correspondence details Murray's pre-war travels through Europe, visiting Berlin, Potsdam and Lucerne, on a NSW Department of Education Travelling Scholarship, his enlistment in the Australian Imperial Force (AIF), training at the Royal Military College, Duntroon, voyage to Europe, military training at Salisbury Plain in England, and active service as an intelligence officer with the 55th Battalion on the Western Front in France and Belgium. The wallet also includes a postcard, cablegram and card Murray received.

Wallet 2 of 2 - Consists of documents, correspondence and certificates related to Murray's military service and later life. The wallet includes two safe conduct passes, a Banque de France Savings Bond and correspondence in French related to Murray's travels in France between August 1914 and August 1915, two certificates for attending an AIF School of Instruction for Candidates for Commission and a course in trench warfare and bombing (the former with a poem in French on the reverse), a photograph of Murray speaking with King George V at Salisbury Plain, England, and a form letter to Murray's mother acknowledging her donation of a photograph of Murray to the Sydney University Union in 1917. The wallet also includes: the certificate of warrant appointing Murray a Member of the Order of the British Empire in 1919 as well as correspondence and a letter of congratulations on the award from General Sir William Birdwood; a 1919 portrait of Murray in military uniform; and a 3-page handwritten document containing biographical details on Murray's life.
