Description
Collection relating to the First World War service of 1924 Battery Sergeant Major William Gilbert McKenzie, 9th Battery, 3 Field Artillery Brigade. Collection consists of a diary containing regular entries, supplemented by extracts from letters home recording the voyage to Egypt, training, the Battle of the Wassir; the Gallipoli campaign particularly details of the evacuation. It also covers his movement to France with graphic details of the French winter, trench warfare and the use of gas. It includes entries on leave and his eventual return to Australia in 1919.
