Description

Original four-page letter dated 31 July 1917 written from London by 3108 Private (Pte) Arthur Leslie Lynch to his parents. Contents provide an excellent synopsis of Pte Lynch's war service with 55 Battalion from the unit's formation in Egypt, journey to France and subsequent service on the Western Front. Includes understated accounts of his participation in the Fromelles attack (19 July 1916), operations on the Somme in the winter of 1916 and involvement in the Bullecourt fighting in May 1917. Also includes unfavourable comments on French agricultural practices and contrasting treatment received by Australian soldiers whilst on leave in England and France. Collection also includes an autographed 'Souvenir Programme of the Initial Performance by the Australian Staff Entertainers' (31 August 1917) and autographed programme for the 'Farewell March of the Australian Troops, London, 25 April 1919', the latter being associated with the service of F M Stapleton (nee Winter) who worked in Australia House during the First World War.
