Description

Collection relating to the First World War service of 2417 Lance Corporal Rubin James Hillier DCM, 56th Australian Infantry Battalion. Collection consists of:
A 1917 diary covering his service in France;
A 1918 diary;
A copy of Hillier's Distinguished Conduct Medal citation letter from Base Records Office, Melbourne. Hillier was awarded a DCM for action in September 1917 at Ploygon Wood;
A certificate of discharge, dated 3 July 1918;
A life membership certificate from the Returned Sailors', Soldiers' and Airmen's Imperial League of Australia (RSSAILA), dated 12 May 1956;
An illustrated certificate of discharge, dated 3 July 1918;
A certificate for the French Medaille Militaire, dated 8 October 1918 with accompanying OHMS Valuable Document despatch document;
A certificate for the Italian Bronze Medal for Military Valor (Medaglia di bronzo al Valore Militare), 25 July 1921;
A certificate of appreciation from the Bundanoon (NSW) Sub-Branch of the RSSAILA, 27 October 1951;
Black and white photograph mounted on card of the Cenotaph, Sydney, presented to Lance Corporal Hillier by the Bundanoon sub-branch of the Returned Sailors', Soldiers' and Airmen's Imperial League of Australia, in appreciation of the many good services rendered.
