Description

Collection relating to the First World War service of Major Arthur Henson Smith, 103 Howitzer Battery, Gallipoli and France. Collection consists of photocopied typescript copies of letters, between 1914 and 1919, written by Corporal Smith to his family describing: the voyage to Egypt, training with the Divisional Ammunition Column, comments on C.E.W. Bean, landing at Gallipoli and account of daily activities, promotion to the Howitzer Battery and his arrival in France, descriptions of the French people, battery action, fighting at Pozieres, leave in the UK, and advice given to his younger brother. He also comments on conscription, the Russian Revolution, patriotism, his views on Prime Minister W.M. Hughes and Archbishop Mannix, the Hindenburg Line and later escort duties with returning German internees. Smith also served in the Second World War and rose to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. Also included is an obituary from the Melbourne Legacy Bulletin following Smith's death in 1973.
