Ball, Herbert James (Private, b.1888 - d.1917)
Description
Collection of 16 items relating to the service of Private Herbert James Ball who served with the 9th Battalion, in the First World War and was killed in action 5 January 1917 near Dernancourt, France. Items in the collection include, postcards, Christmas card, ANZAC Day service program, address notification, telegram, news clipping dated 5 March 1917. There is also a copy of a black and white studio photograph of Pte Ball in uniform. Added to the collection in July 2009 were 3 original handwritten unauthored poems and a letter dated 28 February 1917 written by J Ramsey (friend of Pte Ball's) to 'Miss Walsh', mentioning the death of Pte Ball, and a key to a code used by Herbert Ball when writing to his 'loving girl'.
