Description

Collection relating to the Multinational Force and Observers (MFO) service of Wing Commander Nicholas William (Nick) Hobson DFC, AFC, and the Rotary Wing Aviation Unit, Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF), Sinai, 1982-1986.

The collection consists of one wallet, containing a copy of "Quiet Success: Anzacs in the Sinai, 1982-1986", and two oversized scrapbook albums compiled by the contingents of RAAF personnel who served with the Rotary Wing Aviation Unit as part of the MFO on the Sinai peninsula between 1982 to 1986. The scrapbooks contain news clippings, photographs, drawings, and anecdotes related to events, activities and duties performed while deployed to the Sinai.

Wallet 1 of 1 - Contains a copy of the booklet "Quiet Success: Anzacs in the Sinai, 1982-1986". The booklet was produced by Flying Officer G. Stuart in 1986 to commemorate the Anzac Rotary Wing Aviation Unit (RWAU) and its four years of service in the Sinai as part of the MFO. The booklet opens with a forward by Lieutenant General Egil Ingebrigtsen, Force Commander of the MFO, and an address by Wing Commander Nick Hobson, and includes a brief overview of the origins of the MFO and the role of the RWAU. The booklet contains dozens of photographs of the operations and ceremonies in which the RWAU participated, such as the 1984 Gloucester Cup parade, and the recreational activities enjoyed by the personnel. It concludes with a short list of Arabic and Hebrew translations of common words and phrases.

Oversize 1 of 2 - Consists of scrapbook 1, containing material from 1982 to circa 1984. The scrapbook includes dozens of photographs, sketches, news clippings, and anecdotes related to events, activities and duties performed by the RWAU while deployed to the Sinai. The scrapbook covers the arrival of the RWAU in the Sinai, initial impressions and press coverage, living conditions, VIP visits, parades and inspections, rescue operations, Christmas, medal presentations, concerts and parties, and commemorative ceremonies such as Anzac Day.

Oversize 2 of 2 - Consists of scrapbook 2, containing material from 1984 to the withdrawal of the Australian contingent in 1986. The scrapbook similarly includes dozens of photographs, sketches, news clippings, and anecdotes related to events, activities and duties performed by the RWAU in the Sinai. The scrapbook covers visits by General Sir Phillip Bennett and Air Marshal David Evans, the rotation of personnel, living conditions, operations, concerts and parties, parades and medal investitures, Anzac Day and commemorative ceremonies, interactions with the New Zealand and French contingents, and the departure of the Australian contingent.
