Description

Collection relating to Australian civilian nurse Joyce Oldroyd-Harris who was interned by the Japanese whilst working as Matron of the hospital in Rabaul, prior to its capture by the Japanese in January 1942. Along with other nurses at Rabaul, she was taken to Japan as a prisoner of war until they were liberated by the American Forces on 31 August 1945, three and a half years after capture. Collection comprises one foolscap page of handwritten notes which was the final medical report for Rabaul Hospital prior to the arrival of the Japanese forces, an original book of handwritten hymns compiled by Oldroyd-Harris whilst a prisoner of war near Totsuka, Japan, an illustrated hand made Chrismas card, a leaflet dropped by the Allied forces after the Japanese had surrendered, and several loose leaf pages of notes written by Oldroyd-Harris including a section titled 'Evacuation of Rabaul 22.01.42'.
