Description
Typescript copy of diary detailing journey to the United Kingdom via the United States, operational training with night fighter squadron before posting to Pathfinder Force with operations over Europe. Also contains copies of letters relating to his death over Germany and extract from flying logbook.
History / Summary
Flying Officer Kemble Russell Wood the son of Frank Russell Wood and Gwendolen Marion Wood. Husband of Ethel Winifred Wood, of Strathfield, New South Wales, Australia. Upon completion of his training he was posted to 405 (Vancouver) Squadron, Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF). Wood was a 27 year old pilot of Avro Lancaster Mk III, serial number JB348 (coded LQ-R) which was on a night bombing attack on Leipzig. He was shot down over Germany on 20 October 1943 crashing at Harrenstatte. He is buried in a communal grave at the Reichswald Forest War Cemetery in Germany.
