Description

The Sheet Music collection consists of commercially printed pieces, albums, and books of sheet music. The collection includes popular songs, some by well known composers such as Noel Coward, Cole Porter and Irving Berlin. Pieces in the collection date from the 1850s to mid-2000s.

Most pieces feature a wartime or patriotic theme, relating to Australian, British, New Zealand and United States military forces. French, German and Japanese pieces are also included in the collection. Other themes include recruitment, battle marches or commemoration, homefront and romance, with many expressing sentiment or humour.

Many pieces may have been played to troops at the front by concert parties, played at home, or feature in popular films or musicals of the time.
