Description

This folder contains 52 letters received by Field Marshal Lord William Birdwood from men and women of various military and civilian positions between 6 January and 30 May 1916. Some of the correspondents include General Sir Dighton Probyn (Knight General Officer of Royal Household), General Brulard, Sir James Allen (New Zealand Minister of Defence), Aubrey Herbert (British diplomat), and Andrew Fisher (Australian High Commissioner to United Kingdom). One letter from C J F Harding includes a humorous piece of writing titled “Jim” which pokes fun at the soldiers’ fondness for ‘Birdie’. This file features several letters commenting on the evacuation from Gallipoli.
