Description

This series contains letters exchanged by Field Marshal Lord William Birdwood and Sir Ronald Craufurd Munro Ferguson between 4 August 1915 and 4 September 1919. During this period, Munro Ferguson was the Governor-General of Australia. Some of the subjects discussed in these letters include recruitment, the conscription referendum, discipline, the evacuation from Gallipoli, demobilisation, peace celebrations, and conditions in the trenches. This series also contains a file of correspondence between Birdwood and Lady Helen Munro Ferguson about official recognition for nominated members of the Australian Red Cross.
