Series 8: Personal correspondence, 1912-1918
This series contains letters exchanged by Field Marshal Lord William Birdwood with members of his immediate and extended family. There is an extensive series of letters written by Birdwood to his wife, Lady Janetta Hope Birdwood, dated 1915, 1916, and 1918. There are also letters from his son and daughter as well as correspondence with his uncles, sister, and cousins. Also included in this series is a large collection of postcards that were collected by Birdwood’s niece, Lydia Joan Birdwood, between 1899 and 1919. Some of the subjects discussed in these letters are Australian soldiers, the periscope rifle, Lone Pine, the evacuation from Gallipoli, Pozieres, visiting Australia after the war, the capture of Lille, and the Armistice of 11 November 1918.
