Description

Letters relating to the First World War service of Lieutenant George Leslie Makin, 5th Infantry Battalion. These were sent by George Makin to his parents and brothers, and date from 2 January 1917 to 20 August 1918. Topics covered include the terrible conditions in France during the winter, Makin's experiences in the Battle of Bullecourt and feelings about the progress of the war. Makin also writes often about his feelings of worry for his mother at home, and his exasperation at the difficulty in being granted leave, especially over Christmas.
