Description

Transcript of diary and letter extracts relating to the First World War service of 399 Lieutenant Ronald Alison McInnis, 53rd Battalion. In this transcript, covering 22 May 1915 to 22 May 1919, McInnis details his experiences as an engineer whilst serving with 26 Battalion and later 53 Battalion.
He documents his initial training and service in Egypt and at Gallipoli from September 1915 to December 1915. McInnis is later sent to the front line in France where he describes the fighting around Armentieres and Fleurbaix in July 1916, and the fighting around Albert and Bapaume in October 1916. He also details the fighting around Albert (February 1917), Bullecourt (May 1917), Ypres and Passchendaele (September 1917), and the offensive against the Hindenburg Line near Bellicourt (September 1918). During this period McInnis is promoted to the rank of second lieutenant (September 1916) and then lieutenant (April 1917).
