Description

Letters relating to the First World War service of Lieutenant Colonel Leslie Cecil Maygar, 8th Light Horse Regiment. This file consists of letters written by Maygar as well as letters of condolence written by others after his death. His initial letter describes the evacuation at Gallipoli and his subsequent transfer from 4 Light Horse Regiment to the command of 8 Light Horse Regiment. Maygar's letters then begin to detail the the first two battles for Gaza, in particular the substantial preparations for the second battle in April. He also describes the conditions of the Sinai and important events such as being awarded the Distinguished Service Order and his promotion to Lieutenant Colonel. We learn from Lieutenant Colonel Archibald McGibbon McLaurin that Maygar died on 1 November 1917 due to wounds sustained at the Battle of Beersheba.
