Letters from Josiah Allen to his brother, 1917
Letters relating to the First World War service of 2614 Private Josiah Allen, 49th Battalion. In this series of letters to his brother, Allen details his experiences whilst serving with 49th Battalion. He was one of the three Allen brothers to serve during the conflict, all of whom served with 49th Battalion. Allen responds to news from home and includes some details of his military service, although due to censorship concerns this is limited. His last letter is dated 18 April 1917, less than two months before he was killed in action (along with his brother James) on 7 June 1917 at the Battle of Messines in Belgium.
