Description

Letters relating to the First World War service of Captain Arthur Arundel Mackenzie, 1st Infantry Battalion. In this series of letters Mackenzie details his experiences whilst serving with 1st Battalion of the Imperial Camel Corps and later 14 Light Horse Regiment. He mentions key events such as the Second Battle of Gaza in 1917 and the attack on Musallabah in 1918. Of particular note, Mackenzie also mentions the praise from a British Army Brigadier to an Australian Brigadier about how the Australians "clung to an almost untenable position for nearly two days in spite of the heavy casualties." His last writings are about the state of Syria and the hardships of its starving people during the war.
